Today we'll be dealing with a sort of east topic- 'los preposiciones'. It's generally easy to study but learner generally think of it as difficult because of the number of prepositions- there are a lot in Spanish. Don't worry tho, we got you.

So let's start with the meaning of prepositions.


What are prepositions?


A preposition is an invariable grammatical category that serves to relate or unite other words.

It is a word or group of words used before a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase to show direction, time, place, location, spatial relationships, or to introduce an object. It basically describes an object in relation with another object.


The main characteristic is that they do not change in gender or number and are placed in front of nouns.

SOME COMMONLY USED PREPOSITIONS

  • A – To, at, towards

Voy a la biblioteca.

(I am going to the library.)

  • En – In, on, over

El libro está en la bolsa.

(The book is in the bag.)

  • De – From, of

Carlos es el hijo de Marta.

(Carlos is the son of Marta.)

  • Desde – From, since

Mi hija vino desde Alemania ayer.

(My daughter came from Germany yesterday.)

  • Hasta – Until

Los invitados se quedarán hasta el sábado.

(The guests will stay until Saturday.)

  • Encima de – Above, on

Las llaves están encima de la mesa.

(The keys are above/on top of the table.)

  • Debajo de – Below, under

El gato está debajo de la silla.

(The cat is under the chair.)

  • Dentro de – Inside, within

El regalo está dentro de la caja.

(The gift is inside the box.)

  • Fuera de – Outside

Hay alguien fuera de la puerta.

(There is someone outside the door.)

  • Al lado de – Next to, beside

Hay un restaurant al lado de mi casa.

(There is a restaurant next to my house.)

  • En frente de/ Delante de – In front of

No puedes aparcar su coche en frente de la librería.

(You cannot park your car in front of the bookstore.)

  • Detrás de – Behind, back

Hay un parque detrás de mi edificio.

(There is a park behind my building.)

  • A la derecha – To the right, on the right

La puerta está a la derecha.

(The gate is on the right.)

  • A la izquierda – To the left, on the left

A la izquierda, puedes ver la cocina.

(To the left, you can see the kitchen.)

  • Entre – Between, among

Para la foto, me sentaré entre mis padres.

(For the photo, I will sit between my parents.)
