La hora
We use the verb SER to tell the time.
Use ‘es’ (second person singular) when referring to one o'clock and use ‘son’ (third person plural) when referring to all other hours.
We use the feminine articles ‘la’ and ‘las’ because 'hora' is feminine in gender. ‘La’ for one o'clock and ‘Las’ for all others.
Example- Es la una.
Son las dos.
Minutes can be added to the hour using ‘y’ and subtracted from the hour using ‘menos’.
Example- Es la una y cinco minutos.
Son las cinco menos seis minutos.
The word ‘medio’ is used to indicate half and the word ‘cuarto’/ ‘quince’ is used to indicate quarter.
Example- Es la una y medio.
Son las seis menos cuarto.
Note:
Cuarto = quarter
Cuatro = four
To differentiate between "a.m., p.m.", use la mañana, la tarde y la noche.
Example- Son las cuatro por la tarde. (It's 4 in the afternoon.)
Something that occurs at a fixed point in time - a + la/las + hora
Example- La película comienza a las ocho. (The movie starts at 8.)
Something that does not have a specific time - por la mañana, por la tarde or por la noche.
Example- Ana vuelve de la escuela por la tarde. (Ana returns from school in/by the afternoon.)
